Ohio State Star’s Mother Murdered In Drive-By Shooting

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the college football world and beyond, Ashley Griggs, the mother of Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago.

The incident occurred shortly after 2am local time on Sunday morning, leaving Griggs dead and four others wounded.

“We can confirm this was Carnell’s mother,” stated Ohio State University in a heartfelt statement.

The 40-year-old victim was among five individuals who were shot in the drive-by attack. She was immediately rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The other victims include one woman and three men, all currently receiving medical attention for their injuries.

Tate, a talented freshman wide receiver for Ohio State, is now grappling with the loss of his mother, whom he held dear to his heart.

His former high school, Marist High School in Chicago, and the IMG Academy in Florida, where he played during his junior and senior seasons, have been the pillars of his football journey before joining Ohio State earlier this year.

Ranked as the third-best wide receiver in 247’s 2023 recruiting class, Tate’s promising career is now overshadowed by this heart-wrenching tragedy. However, the university and the coaching staff have pledged their full support to the young athlete during this difficult period.

“Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time,” said Ohio State in the statement.

The drive-by shooting has once again highlighted the escalating violence in certain areas of Chicago. The Harrison police district, where the shooting occurred, has witnessed a 30 percent increase in murders compared to the previous year, as reported by NBC Chicago.

Griggs was known for her unwavering support for her son’s football journey, with her social media filled with posts celebrating his achievements. She had excitedly shared the unveiling of her son’s #17 jersey for Ohio State, expressing her pride and joy.

In response to the tragic loss, the family released a brief statement through Angelina Griggs, Ashley’s mother. “On behalf of our entire family, we will not be commenting at this time. There is an active and ongoing investigation into Ashley’s murder, and until that investigation is concluded, we will not be commenting. Thank you.”
