Notre Dame Adds Another Duke Transfer After Riley Leonard’s Commitment

Notre Dame’s football program continues to make waves in the transfer portal, securing commitments from two Duke transfers in as many days.

First, Duke quarterback Riley Leonard announced his decision to join the Fighting Irish on social media. Leonard had an impressive 2022 season with the Blue Devils, amassing 2,967 passing yards and accounting for 33 total touchdowns.

Shortly after Leonard’s announcement, Duke transfer RJ Oben revealed his commitment to Notre Dame. Oben, a talented edge rusher, expressed confidence in the Fighting Irish coaching staff and their defensive philosophy, believing it will bring out the best in him.

“I love the coaching staff and feel like the defensive philosophy is one that I can excel in,” Oben said. “Coach Washington displayed to me a solid plan for how I can improve as a player that I appreciated. Coach Golden also runs an NFL-style, top-tier defense that I’m excited to be a part of.”

During his time at Duke from 2019 to 2023, Oben compiled an impressive resume with 67 total tackles, 14 sacks, and four forced fumbles.

With the additions of Oben and Leonard, Notre Dame’s roster for the 2024 season looks promising if both players realize their potential. The Fighting Irish may continue to explore the transfer portal to bolster their talent pool further.
