Nick Saban Takes Blame For Crimson Tide’s CFP Loss: ‘We Shot Ourselves In The Foot’

Alabama Coach Nick Saban Takes Responsibility for Rose Bowl Loss to Michigan

Alabama’s hopes for a College Football Playoff championship were dashed in an overtime loss to Michigan at the Rose Bowl, and Coach Nick Saban shouldered the blame for the defeat. While crediting the Wolverines for their performance, Saban acknowledged that the Crimson Tide’s lack of execution played a significant role in the loss.

Saban expressed his view that a crucial fourth-down play in overtime, where quarterback Jalen Milroe’s run was stopped short of the goal line, was part of the execution issue. Despite their preparation for Michigan’s pressure, the Tide couldn’t execute the play as planned.

On the offensive front, Alabama struggled, managing only 288 yards and allowing six sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Milroe, a Heisman Trophy candidate, was held to 116 passing yards and no touchdowns.

In the locker room, players offered different explanations for the team’s struggles. Defensive back Malachi Moore pointed to mental lapses, while cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry emphasized the need for better execution. Star edge rusher Dallas Turner couldn’t explain why the defense couldn’t generate more pressure on Michigan’s quarterback.

Offensive lineman Tyler Booker admitted that Michigan’s stunts disrupted their offense, leading to issues in protecting Milroe. Booker acknowledged that the team faced “drive-stoppers,” similar to earlier in the season.

Despite the loss, Saban expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments during the season, which included winning the SEC championship. He reflected on the journey the team had undertaken and the lessons learned from the defeat.

While disappointed by the outcome, Saban expressed gratitude for the team’s efforts, noting, “This is one of the most amazing seasons in Alabama football history in terms of where this team came from, what they were able to accomplish, and what they were able to do.”

As the Crimson Tide looks to the future, they aim to learn from their mistakes and build on their successes in the seasons to come.
