In an absolute stunner out of left field, legendary Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced his retirement, citing a multitude of challenges in the ever-evolving college football landscape.
Saban, who has been a vocal critic of recent changes in the sport, addressed the media to shed light on his decision.
“I really do try to think about what’s best for the sport. We have to deal with name, image and likeness now, but when we started this a few years ago, and I said, ‘Is this what we want college football to become?’ I got criticized for saying that,” Saban said.
“Now people are saying, ‘Whoa, maybe we should be looking at this a little closer, because maybe this isn’t what we want college sports to become.’”
WOW! College Football just lost the GOAT to retirement. WOW! I knew it would happen 1 day soon but not this soon. The game has change so much that it chased the GOAT away. College football let's hold up our mirrors and say HONESTLY what u see. #CoachPrime @CUBuffsFootball

His comments and the overall timing of his shocking decision led many to think that the new Wild Wild West world of NIL and the transfer portal is what caused him to step down.
However, Saban pushed back on that assumption…
“Don’t make it about that. It’s not about that,” Saban told ESPN. “To me, if you chose to coach, you don’t need to be complaining about all that stuff. You need to adjust to it and adapt to it and do the best you can under the circumstances and not complain about it.”
“Now, I think everybody is frustrated about it. We had an SEC conference call, 14 coaches on there [Wednesday], and there’s not one guy you can talk to who really understands what’s happening in college football and thinks that’s not an issue,” he added.
The college football landscape has undergone significant transformations in recent years, particularly with the introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness in 2021 and the evolution of the transfer portal.
These changes have added complexity and challenges for coaches, to say the least.
Just make him commissioner of CFB so he can fix this mess it’s become

Saban has always been in favor of players’ right to be paid for their “labor” and all the massive profits they help provide to their university.
However, it’s clear that the current structure of NIL is an absolute nightmare and major guard-rails need to be put in place.
"Name, Image and Likeness has totally transformed the way this sport works. Nick Saban has actually complained about NIL several times. The transfer portal has made it much harder to hold on to his depth."@chris_hummer explains why he thinks Nick Saban decided to retire 🗣️ pic.twitter.com/tLnatxnbvb

Despite his clear frustration with the system, Saban emphasized that his decision to retire was a personal one and not directly related to the new challenges (or his health for that matter).
Nick Saban is a genius. He is getting out at the perfect time. The edge he had for majority of his career has vanished. No one will ever dominate the sport the way he did – especially in the new NIL/portal world.

“We’ve been in this era for three years now, and we’ve adapted to it and won in this era, too … It’s just that I’ve always known when it would be time to turn it over to somebody else, and this is that time,” Saban said.
did Nick Saban choose retirement over NIL recruitment? 🤔@ShannonSharpe @ochocinco pic.twitter.com/bPjgPOwO9R

Do you believe what Saban said?
Or do you think NIL and the transfer portal is one of the main, if not THE main, reason why he retired?
Nick Saban is a legend forever but I’m sure he saw NIL, the transfer portal, the 12 team playoff and realized the game not the same game he mastered anymore

Who do you think will end up replacing him at Alabama?
Is he indeed the greatest college football coach of all-time???
