The NFL Network recently released its much-anticipated Top 100 Players of 2024 list, spotlighting two notable Chicago Bears: defensive end Montez Sweat and wide receiver Keenan Allen.
However, the list has sparked controversy due to the glaring omission of cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
Johnson’s performance in the 2023 season was nothing short of exceptional. He recorded a career-high four interceptions, 36 tackles, one tackle for loss, 10 pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 14 games.
These achievements earned him Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors.
According to Pro Football Focus, Johnson was the top-graded cornerback, allowing only a 55.2% completion rate and an opposing passer rating of 50.9, both career bests.
When asked about being left off the Top 100 list, Johnson didn’t hide his frustration.
“Bullsh*t,” Johnson said. “Everybody makes mistakes, it ain’t just the media that do it. Players clearly – if they voted for it – they made some goddamn mistakes.
“But it is what it is. At the end of the day, I know the truth and it’s alright.”
The Top 100 list, voted on by the players, has faced criticism for being a popularity contest.
This sentiment is echoed by many who question how New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who played only four snaps in the entire 2023 season, made the list over the highest-graded cornerback according to Pro Football Focus.
“It’s disrespectful because I go out there, line up, and I know receivers can’t say that I’m not one of the best players they play against,” Johnson said. “Ain’t no way there are 100 guys who are better.”
Johnson expressed that his snub from the Top 100 list will “100 percent” motivate him this season.
Coming off a career year and earning a massive contract extension, Johnson is determined to prove his worth.
“I got some more for them,” he declared.
