Mishael Powell, Ex-University of Washington Defensive Back, Joins Miami Hurricanes

Former University of Washington defensive standout, Mishael Powell, known for his dramatic interception return in Husky Stadium, is making waves in the transfer portal, landing a spot with the Miami Hurricanes under coach Mario Cristobal.

Powell, celebrated for his game-saving interception against Arizona State, announced his move from the Pac-12 to the ACC, choosing Miami over Florida. This decision follows his entry into the transfer portal just four days after the Huskies faced Michigan in the national championship game, highlighting the speed of his transition to a new football home in South Beach.

Powell’s journey is one of resilience and determination. Initially joining the UW as a walk-on from O’Dea High School, he evolved from a non-scholarship athlete into a starting cornerback, safety, and nickelback. Despite initially receiving scholarship offers only from Ivy League schools, Powell’s dedication and skill propelled him to a prominent role on the team.

The pinnacle of Powell’s career at his hometown school occurred in mid-November when, with the Huskies trailing 7-6 against Arizona State, he intercepted a crucial pass, sprinting 89 yards for a game-changing touchdown, ultimately securing a 15-7 victory for UW.

Having spent five seasons with the Huskies and starting in 26 of the 36 games he played, Powell concluded his UW tenure on a high note, sharing the team lead in interceptions for the past season with cornerback Jabbar Muhammad. Now, as he embarks on this new chapter with the Miami Hurricanes, Powell’s remarkable journey continues in the competitive landscape of college football.
