Mike Tomlin’s Eye-Opening Comments Throws Wrench In Steelers QB Race

In a surprising move back in March, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year, veteran minimum deal.

Initially poised to be the starter, Wilson’s signing was swiftly followed by Pittsburgh’s acquisition of former Chicago Bears quarterback and No. 11 overall pick, Justin Fields.

Between March and the start of training camp, Wilson was the presumptive starter according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

However, those plans might be changing.

During conditioning tests at the start of camp, Wilson suffered a calf injury, leaving the door open for Fields to step up. And step up he did. Fields seized the opportunity, impressing both coaches and teammates with his performance.

Appearing on ā€œTraining Camp Live,ā€ Tomlin praised Fieldsā€™ on-field talent and professional demeanor.

“I love his professionalism, his consistent approach to work, and his even-keel demeanor that’s good for leadership,” Tomlin remarked.

“I’ve been surprised by his athleticism, to be quite honest with you. I’ve seen the video, obviously, but to see it up close and personal every day, he’s a special athlete, man. He can do a lot.”

Tomlinā€™s praise is significant given his extensive experience with quarterbacks. With Wilson still sidelined due to his injury, Fields is making the most of his chance to shine.

If Wilson doesnā€™t recover soon, he might find himself in a backup role as Fields continues to impress during camp.

While most people still expect Wilson to be under center come Week 1, crazier things have happened.

Even if Wilson indeed ends up entering the season as the firm starter, it’s safe to assume that Fields will still see action in special packages.

Who do YOU think will end up being the starter?

Perhaps just as interesting, who do you think will be Pittsburgh’s starter a year from now???
