Michigan Promotes Quarterbacks Coach Kirk Campbell To Offensive Coordinator

Michigan has made some significant coaching changes, with Kirk Campbell being elevated to the position of offensive coordinator under the leadership of new head coach Sherrone Moore.

At 37 years old, Campbell steps into this crucial role, taking over from Moore while still maintaining his duties as the Wolverines’ quarterbacks coach. The university made this announcement on Friday, solidifying Campbell’s status as the man in charge of the offensive strategy. His journey to this point involved a transition from an analyst role, stemming from Michigan’s decision to terminate co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss in January 2023 amid allegations of potential computer access misconduct within the team’s facilities.

While the promotion of Campbell had been anticipated, there were whispers about the possibility of him joining former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers, as suggested by sources.

Campbell’s impact on the Wolverines’ offense was felt last season when he played a pivotal role in quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s rise to Big Ten Quarterback of the Year and a first-team all-league selection. It was a triumphant season for Michigan, culminating in their first national championship win since 1997. Before arriving at Michigan in 2022, Campbell held the position of offensive coordinator at Old Dominion in 2021. His football journey also includes a three-year stint as an offensive analyst at Penn State.

In addition to Campbell’s promotion, Michigan has made other changes to their coaching staff. Grant Newsome, previously the tight ends coach, will now oversee the offensive line. Moore, who had been coaching the offensive line since 2021 while serving as a coordinator, believes that Campbell and Newsome possess remarkable offensive acumen and expects them to make substantial contributions to the team’s offensive development.

Furthermore, J.B. Brown has been promoted from an analyst role to special teams coordinator. Brown has been actively involved with Michigan’s special teams since 2021, and Moore commended his exceptional aptitude for the role, describing him as having an “outstanding mind” for special teams coaching.

These changes signal a new era for Michigan’s football program under Sherrone Moore, and fans eagerly anticipate how the team will evolve under this fresh coaching setup.
