NBC Sunday Night Football broadcasters Cris Collinsworth and Mike Tirico hinted at potential friction between two Dallas Cowboys stars during their win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, but many fans have a different interpretation of the moment.
During the second quarter, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw an interception on a pass intended for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Cameras caught a brief, seemingly tense exchange between the two on the sideline shortly after.
Collinsworth commented on the scene, noting Prescott’s interception from the Pittsburgh 15-yard line.
“Hard to explain, just throwing into coverage – and something’s wrong,” Collinsworth said. “CeeDee Lamb at the end of that. I’ll let you read your own lips. At Dak. Dak doesn’t react at all. Doesn’t look good.”
“Not a bit,” Tirico added. “Not a bit.”
Some fans speculated on social media that Lamb may have been frustrated with Prescott for what they perceived as a poor throw.
But Prescott’s calm demeanor, as he didn’t look at Lamb while he spoke, left the interaction open to interpretation.
The incident followed a miscommunication on the field, where Prescott appeared to throw a short comeback route, but Lamb had run deeper into the end zone. This resulted in one of Prescott’s two interceptions for the game.
However, many fans took to X to propose an alternative theory: instead of frustration, they believe Lamb was offering reassurance to his quarterback.
“Jump ball [No.] four, jump ball, I got you!” several users claimed Lambed said.
This view found support among a wider audience online, with many criticizing Collinsworth for jumping to conclusions.
While the “jump balls” suggestion may very well be correct, the fact of the matter is this wasn’t one of those clear-cut examples of easy lip-reading.
“What the f*ck did Ceedee Lamb say to Dak Prescott? Chris Collinsworth made it seem like it was easy to read,” one user said.
Despite the interception and the brief sideline moment, Prescott ultimately had the last word on the field.
With just 20 seconds left in the game, he threw a game-winning four-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Tolbert on fourth-and-goal, securing a 20-17 victory for the Cowboys.
Prescott finished the game with 352 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Lamb had a quieter night with five receptions for 62 yards.
Having said all of that, you can’t fully blame Collinsworth for jumping to the conclusion he did. After all, there are plenty of rumors circulating about just how frustrated Lamb has been this season.
Regardless, the Cowboys now sit at 3-2 after their much-needed victory in Pittsburgh. Next up is an NFC showdown against the Detroit Lions.
