In his inaugural week as the head coach of Alabama’s college football program, Kalen DeBoer is wasting no time shaping his coaching staff. Reports from 247Sports reveal significant changes to the support staff in Tuscaloosa, with notable departures and retentions.
Among the analysts not expected to return are John McNulty, former offensive coordinator for Boston College and Rutgers, boasting extensive NFL coaching experience, and Zach Mettenberger, a former LSU and NFL quarterback. Additionally, the coaching staff will part ways with Charlie Strong, former head coach of Texas, and Ken Whisenhunt, a former NFL head coach.

However, DeBoer has decided to retain the services of defensive line coach Freddie Roach, a familiar face with the Crimson Tide since 2020, along with running backs coach Robert Gillespie.
Notable exits include offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, offensive line coach Eric Wolford, and inside linebackers coach Robert Bala. It’s worth mentioning that Rees had interviewed for the head coaching position before DeBoer’s appointment.
The defensive side of the coaching staff is undergoing change as well, with defensive coordinator Kevin Steele announcing his retirement earlier this month. As DeBoer puts his stamp on the program, these alterations signify a new era for Alabama football.
