Giants Bring in Joel Thomas as RBs Coach and Aaron Wellman as Executive Director of Player Performance

The New York Giants have made some noteworthy additions to their coaching staff, bringing in Joel Thomas as their new running backs coach and appointing Aaron Wellman as the executive director of player performance. These moves come as part of the team’s efforts to strengthen its coaching personnel for the upcoming NFL season.

Joel Thomas, taking over the role of running backs coach, replaces Jeff Nixon, who recently departed for a position on the Syracuse staff. Thomas brings a wealth of experience to the Giants, having previously worked with the New Orleans Saints’ running backs since 2015 under the leadership of former head coach Sean Payton.

Prior to his NFL tenure, he honed his coaching skills at various collegiate institutions, including stops at Arkansas, Washington, Purdue, Idaho, and Louisville. During his time with the Saints, Thomas played a crucial role in their offensive success.

From 2015 to 2022, the Saints led the entire NFL with an impressive 148 rushing touchdowns. Notably, Saints running back Alvin Kamara achieved extraordinary success under Thomas’ guidance, earning five Pro Bowl selections and setting franchise records with 54 rushing touchdowns and 78 overall touchdowns.

In addition to the hiring of Joel Thomas, the Giants are also welcoming back Aaron Wellman for his second stint with the organization. Wellman, who assumes the role of executive director of player performance, just completed a successful four-season tenure as Indiana’s senior assistant athletic director for football performance.

Prior to this, he served as the Giants’ strength and conditioning coach for four seasons. Wellman’s extensive background in strength and conditioning spans 26 years, including an impressive 14-year tenure in the competitive Big Ten Conference.

His coaching journey has taken him through various prestigious institutions, including the University of Michigan (2011-2014), San Diego State University (2009-2010), and Ball State University (2004-2008), in addition to his previous stint with the Giants from 2016 to 2019.

With these strategic coaching hires, the New York Giants are gearing up to elevate their performance on the gridiron. Joel Thomas and Aaron Wellman bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their respective roles, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead for Giants fans.

As the NFL offseason progresses, the team is undoubtedly focused on building a strong foundation for success in the coming year.
