A former NFL player was taken into custody Saturday night following a reported disturbance on a Delta flight en route to Dublin, Ireland.
The incident led to the flight being diverted back to Boston Logan Airport.
Gosder Cherilus, a former offensive tackle, was detained after causing a commotion on Delta Flight 154, which was forced to return to Boston due to his unruly behavior.
According to Boston 25 News, Cherilus is accused of urinating on another passenger during the flight.
The former NFL star faces charges of disturbing a flight crew and disorderly conduct.
Delta Airlines confirmed the flight’s return, stating, “Delta flight 154 from Boston to Dublin on August 17 returned to Boston Logan due to an unruly customer and was met by law enforcement,” a spokesperson for Delta told Boston 25 News.
“Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement to that end. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel.”
Passengers affected by the incident were rebooked on another flight that departed for Dublin the following night and is scheduled to arrive on Monday.
Cherilus, 40, had a notable NFL career spanning nine seasons. Drafted 17th overall by the Detroit Lions in 2008, he also played for the Indianapolis Colts and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring in 2016.
During his career, Cherilus appeared in 132 games with 116 starts.
A Massachusetts native, Cherilus played high school football at Somerville High and was recognized as an All-Scholastic by the Boston Globe and Boston Herald.
He continued his football career at Boston College, where he was recently inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.
Cherilus is also known for his off-field endeavors, including his role as CEO of Bastion Companies and as founder of the Gosder Cherilus Foundation.
He is scheduled to appear in East Boston District Court today for arraignment.
