The Philadelphia Eagles welcomed wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith back to the lineup on Sunday, and their presence helped the team secure a 28-14 win over the Cleveland Browns, pushing their record to 3-2 for the season.
However, despite the victory, the Eagles’ offense is still struggling to find a consistent rhythm.
For the fifth consecutive game, the Eagles failed to score in the first quarter, making them the only team in the NFL without any points in the opening quarter this season.
While the offense picked up momentum as the game progressed, wide receiver DeVonta Smith acknowledged that there’s still a lingering problem with the unit.
Right tackle Lane Johnson, on the other hand, offered a blunter assessment of the team’s offensive woes.
“We’re a constipated offense,” Johnson said. “That’s what it f*cking feels like … We’re definitely frustrated. We have a lot of ability, a lot of talent and we are making games more competitive than they need to be.
“It’s something that we’ve got to fix. As far as talent-wise, this is one of the more loaded offenses I’ve been a part of, but we still have to go prove it.”
Johnson added that while the Eagles boast one of the most talented rosters he’s ever been a part of, they have yet to consistently show that on the field.
This has been a reoccurring issue in Philadelphia ever since their magical run to the Super Bowl two seasons ago.
The heat ratchets up on head coach Nick Sirianni with each and every passing second it seems. It’s gotten to the point where even tight wins feel like losses.
Of course, Sirianni doesn’t do himself many favors with his antics on the sidelines – especially when he picks fights with his own fans.
We all know how passionate Sirianni is. For a while, it was looking like his whacky personality was going to be a perfect fit in Philadelphia.
However, things quickly turn upside down when you stop winning.
On that note, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg spoke today about how Sirianni’s thin-skin might lead to his demise in Philly.
“I’m sorry, I can’t just not say this now. You don’t get to choose in life the parts that you like and the parts that you don’t like,” Greenberg said.
“If you’re not ready to be booed, then I’m telling you right now, don’t be the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. I’m not sitting here saying, fire the coach, I’m saying the coach needs to look at himself in the mirror and say, what the heck was I thinking yesterday.”
Fellow ESPN’er Damien Woody was more forward with his thoughts on Sirianni. “This dude is a straight clown, bro. I just don’t have any respect for what this man is doing,” he said.
Indeed, it was a bizarre scene in Philly on Sunday.
Chants of “Fire Nick” came raining down in the first half. While the Eagles ended up winning the game, it’s clear that something major is off with the whole operation.
There’s still time for Sirianni to turn things around and get the city back on his side. However, the clock is ticking.
What are your thoughts on the mess in Philly?
Should the Eagles start thinking about Bill Belichick???
