Bobby Petrino Set To Return As Arkansas Offensive Coordinator, Sources Confirm

Bobby Petrino is making a return to familiar territory as he’s set to become the offensive coordinator at Arkansas, according to sources. The former Razorbacks head coach is expected to finalize the deal and be on campus in Fayetteville shortly.

Petrino spent the recent season as Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator but wasn’t retained by the Aggies after Jimbo Fisher’s dismissal. Notably, the Aggies defeated the Razorbacks earlier in the season.

This move marks a dramatic return for Petrino to Arkansas, where his previous stint ended in 2012 amidst a scandal involving the hiring of his lover and deception regarding their relationship. His departure came to light following a motorcycle accident and led to his firing.

Notably, Petrino’s hiring is expected to require presidential approval due to his previous dismissal for cause. The school’s termination policy states that employees dismissed for cause are not eligible for reemployment within the University of Arkansas System.

Petrino, 62, was considered seriously for the position, and he indicated his interest in an SEC coordinator job during recruiting activities.

While Bobby Petrino has faced controversy in the past, his reputation as a skilled playcaller is undeniable. He notably coached Lamar Jackson during his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2016 at Louisville and led Arkansas to Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl appearances in his final two seasons with the Razorbacks.

His recent stint with Texas A&M saw the offense perform well, finishing 25th nationally in scoring.

Petrino’s coaching journey has been eventful, with stops at Western Kentucky, Louisville, and Missouri State since his time at Arkansas.

The move comes as Arkansas retained head coach Sam Pittman earlier this month amid a challenging season. Arkansas fired offensive coordinator Dan Enos in October, and the program aims to rebuild with Petrino’s offensive expertise.

Petrino’s return to Arkansas is sure to spark interest and debate in the world of college football, given his history and coaching prowess.
