In contrast to concerns that some people have, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has dismissed any notion that Taylor Swift’s presence could be a distraction amidst her relationship with star tight end Travis Kelce.
Reid, speaking on The Athletic’s Scoop City podcast, explained that Kelce’s presence earlier this summer at Swift’s Eras Tour shows is far from that of a spotlight-seeking figure.
Instead, he is more of a “supportive water boy,” happily playing a secondary role while Swift dominates the stage.
Reid emphasized that this dynamic provides a valuable escape for Kelce, allowing him to step back from the spotlight and enjoy Swift’s performances as a fan rather than a star.
“I think he probably loves it, to a point. I think it’s a great escape for him. I said that for Taylor, too, she comes to the game and can kinda escape having to be the show,” Reid said.
“And Travis can do that, and when he goes to her concerts, she’s the star, and he can be hanging out there and be the supportive water boy.”
As the coach of the back-to-back Super Bowl champions, Reid is no stranger to handling unique situations.
The added media attention from Swift’s involvement was just another aspect of an otherwise eventful season, which, despite late-season challenges, culminated in another Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs.
Reid has consistently maintained a positive outlook on Swift’s influence, noting that Kelce has adapted well to the increased public attention that came with dating the pop icon.
“It’s been great for him,” Reid added. “He’s embraced it, and Taylor’s presence has been a positive addition.”
Swift’s attendance at Chiefs games last season caused quite a stir. While many enjoyed them, many others quickly grew sick of them.
Overall, she was present at 13 of Kelce’s games last season, starting with a visit to Arrowhead Stadium on September 24.
The Chiefs won 10 of those 13 games, including all playoff games and the Super Bowl, leading some to believe that Swift’s presence might have had a lucky charm for the team.
Reid’s enduring support and lack of criticism towards Swift reflect his confidence in both the team’s performance and the positive impact of Swift’s presence.
