Aaron Rodgers Clarifies He Didn’t Propose Joining The 53-Man Roster

Recently, we reported that New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers hadn’t initiated the idea to join the 53-man roster, potentially displacing practice-squad cornerback Kalon Barnes. Now, Rodgers himself has confirmed this on Tuesday.

During his regular appearance with Pat McAfee, Rodgers clarified that he had not sought activation when his three-week practice window concluded following his return from injured reserve.

“I assumed I was going to go on IR,” Rodgers explained. “I asked to be put on IR, but then there was a conversation, ‘Do you want to practice?’ I said not at the expense of somebody getting cut. I know how this works.”

The decision to activate Rodgers ultimately led to the release of fullback Nick Bawden, who later signed with the Jets’ practice squad after clearing waivers. This move, in turn, displaced defensive back Kalon Barnes.

Rodgers emphasized that he didn’t feel the need to practice for his ongoing rehabilitation, as he could engage in on-the-field activities independently. However, he acknowledged that his preference was overruled, resulting in an “interesting situation.”

Rodgers also addressed the criticism he received from “conspiracy theorists” who labeled him as selfish for occupying a roster spot without intending to play this season. He reiterated that he would have been comfortable finishing the season on injured reserve.

Separately, Jets coach Robert Saleh confirmed that it was the team’s decision to reinstate Rodgers on the roster.

“[Rodgers] expressed concern about taking up someone’s roster spot and all that stuff, and what it meant,” Saleh said. “But like I told you guys, we had roster flexibility, just like we told him, and we had the ability to do it. And so, we did.”

As previously reported, the Jets had an intense practice session on Friday, with Rodgers leading the scout team and engaging in exchanges with the Jets’ defense.
