Angels General Manager: Moving Forward After Shohei Ohtani’s Transfer To Dodgers

LOS ANGELES – Shohei Ohtani’s decision to join the Dodgers has left the Los Angeles Angels with some significant gaps to fill. The departure of the two-time AL MVP has left a void in the heart of the Angels’ lineup and at the top of their starting rotation, as well as impacting the franchise’s finances.

Angels’ general manager Perry Minasian acknowledged Ohtani’s contribution to the organization but emphasized the need to move forward. “He’s one of the best players that’s ever played for this organization, and we understand that, but life goes on. We’re going to take the rest of the offseason and work as hard as we can to put a really competitive team on the field,” Minasian stated.

Minasian remained tight-lipped about the negotiations that led to Ohtani’s move to the Dodgers, refusing to comment on reports that the Angels had the chance to match the Dodgers’ offer but declined to do so. He said, “When it comes to negotiations, it’s not something we make public.”

Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, had mentioned that the Angels were special to Ohtani and offered him opportunities, but ultimately, Ohtani’s desire to win played a significant role in his decision to leave the Angels.

The Angels’ inability to secure Ohtani is especially painful given that they opted not to trade him this year, despite the risk of losing him without significant compensation. The team’s decision not to trade him at the deadline was followed by a disappointing finish to the season, with the Angels ending their second consecutive season with a losing record.

Minasian expressed no regrets about trying to compete last season, despite the outcome. He emphasized his commitment to strengthening the Angels’ roster and acknowledged the financial support from owner Arte Moreno.

In addition to addressing the void left by Ohtani’s departure, the Angels are focused on improving their pitching staff, which struggled in 2023. They are also considering how to handle the designated hitter position, which Ohtani occupied for six years, and whether to sign a regular DH or rotate other hitters through the spot.

Minasian affirmed the team’s determination to win and improve in the upcoming season, indicating that it is still early in the offseason, and they are actively assessing available options in the market.
