Mookie Betts Set To Take On ‘Everyday’ Infielder For Dodgers In 2024

Mookie Betts, known for his versatility in the Dodgers’ defense last season, is set to take on a more permanent role as the team’s everyday second baseman in 2024, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

Betts, a six-time Gold Glove-winning right fielder, is making the shift to second base to potentially reduce wear and tear on his body. This move marks a return to his roots, as he played as an infielder during his earlier days with the Red Sox.

In the previous season, Betts started 77 games in right field and 74 games in the infield, including 62 games at second base and 12 at shortstop. During an MLB Network interview with Alanna Rizzo, Roberts confirmed Betts’ position change, emphasizing the offensive potential he brings to second base, which can lead to increased playing time and enhance the team’s overall performance.

Despite his extensive experience in right field, with 916 career starts, Betts has expressed his desire to return to the infield, a wish that will be fulfilled in the upcoming season.

As a result of Betts’ shift to second base, the Dodgers will now focus on acquiring a right-handed hitting corner outfielder during the offseason to bolster their roster.
