Seahawks’ Pete Carroll Calls For Significant Alterations To NFL Instant Replay Handling

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, known for his historical stance against the expansion of instant replay, seems to be shifting his perspective. In a recent press conference, Carroll expressed support for a proposal by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay to make all calls reviewable in the final two minutes of a game. Carroll not only endorsed this idea but went further, suggesting that every call should be subject to replay review if it ensures accuracy.

While Carroll admitted he used to prefer relying on officials to make in-game calls without extensive replay, he emphasized the importance of getting every call right. He acknowledged the NFL’s efforts to improve officiating and expressed a willingness to embrace more replay if it contributes to accuracy.

According to Carroll, the primary goal should be ensuring correctness in officiating decisions. He cautioned, however, that any expansion of replay should only occur if the league has the necessary personnel to handle it effectively.

Beyond replay, Carroll advocated for the incorporation of more technology in areas such as measuring first downs and assessing goal-line plays. He emphasized a pragmatic approach, stating that now, with advancements in technology, the league should consider embracing these changes.

While the idea of expanding instant replay might have seemed unlikely in the past, influential figures like Irsay and Carroll supporting such measures could prompt the NFL to contemplate adjustments to its current system.
