Former Ohio State Buckeye, NFL Starter, Cut on Thursday

Next week, the NFL Draft will be a dream come true for hundreds of aspiring football players, eager to step onto the field and make their mark in the league. However, for some veteran players, this time of year signifies the end of their tenure with their respective teams. A notable case is the Tennessee Titans’ recent decision to part ways with offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere.

Drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Petit-Frere brought a wealth of collegiate accolades with him, including All-Big Ten and All-American honors. Over three seasons with the Titans, he appeared in 34 games and made 28 starts. However, his 2024 campaign was challenging, as he struggled significantly on the field, allowing 10 sacks and accruing an equal number of penalties. These difficulties contributed to the Titans’ decision to release him, making room for new talent as they look to reshape their roster for the future.

With the No. 1 overall pick in next week’s draft and seven additional picks, the Titans face a pivotal moment. Many mock drafts are pointing toward Miami quarterback Cam Ward as a likely selection, but they also have compelling options in defensive players like Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter.

Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi hinted at the team’s draft strategy during Miami’s pro day, mentioning, “everything is still on the table” for the first overall pick. His focus has been clear from the start: building a strong offensive line. To this end, the team welcomed tackle Dan Moore and guard Kevin Zeitler through free agency, moves that likely made the team feel secure enough to release Petit-Frere after just three seasons.

Financially, this decision opens up over $3 million in cap space, which will be crucial as the Titans navigate the upcoming draft and its associated opportunities. Given their recent struggles at the quarterback position, highlighted by the inconsistent performances of Will Levis, Malik Willis, and their current options — Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle — selecting a quarterback like Ward could set the stage for a fresh start.

If Ward becomes the Titans’ new signal-caller, the team may also look to bolster their offensive line or even consider adding a top-tier wide receiver to enhance his development and provide him with reliable targets right out of the gate.

As we edge closer to the draft, the future looks complex yet promising for the Titans, Cam Ward, and Nicholas Petit-Frere. The draft could hold significant implications that will shape the franchise for years to come, making every decision count.
