Wolverines Stars McCarthy and Corum Set Sights on 2024 NFL Draft

In a social media announcement on Sunday, Michigan’s dynamic quarterback J.J. McCarthy and powerhouse running back Blake Corum revealed their decision to enter the 2024 NFL draft, capping off their impressive journey as leaders of the Wolverines, who clinched the school’s first national championship in 26 years with a flawless 15-0 season.

McCarthy, a junior hailing from La Grange Park, Illinois, showcased his prowess in the 2023 season, amassing 2,991 passing yards with an impressive 72.3% completion rate, delivering 22 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Despite the run-heavy offensive system at Michigan, McCarthy’s multifaceted skills have garnered mixed reviews from NFL scouts. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. places the 6-foot-3, 202-pound quarterback as the fifth-best in his position for the draft, while Jordan Reid envisions him as the potential No. 12 pick in the first round.

Reflecting on his time at the University of Michigan, McCarthy shared, “After three incredible years at the University of Michigan, I have decided to enter the 2024 NFL draft. The decision was not easy, and how could it be — I love my teammates. I love my coaches, and I love it here in Ann Arbor.”

Corum, a senior from Marshall, Virginia, emerged as a force to be reckoned with, securing his position as the No. 4 draft-eligible running back according to Kiper. Field Yates of ESPN places him as the fifth-best tailback. Corum’s standout season included an impressive 1,245 rushing yards on 258 carries, accompanied by a staggering 27 touchdowns, the most among FBS players.

In a heartfelt video message, Corum expressed gratitude to the Michigan faithful, saying, “Michigan, thank you for the 2-4 season, and thank you for the undefeated season. My four years here have come to an end, but I’m forever grateful for the memories we created.” Corum was instrumental in Michigan’s victorious College Football Playoff campaign, delivering a clutch 17-yard overtime touchdown against Alabama and a stellar 134-yard, two-touchdown performance in the title game against Washington.

Acknowledging the unwavering support he received, Corum conveyed his gratitude: “Thank you to my family, coaches, and everyone who showed support throughout my journey. Even though I’m leaving, I won’t be gone for long. I left you with memories you’ll remember forever. Michigan will forever be home.”

As McCarthy and Corum join the ranks of Michigan players entering the NFL draft, including Kris Jenkins, Zak Zinter, and Junior Colson, the Wolverines face a transition period while celebrating the impactful legacies left by these talented athletes.
