Chicago Cubs Dodge Arbitration, Finalize Agreements with Six Players

In a flurry of strategic maneuvers, the Chicago Cubs have made a decisive move by locking in their roster for the 2024 season, avoiding arbitration with six key players. This proactive stance comes on the heels of the Cubs’ recent announcement of their contract with Japanese free-agent pitcher Shota Imanaga. In addition, they have executed a shrewd trade, bringing in the experienced reliever Yency Almonte and infielder Michael Busch from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

By resolving arbitration concerns ahead of the deadline, the Chicago Cubs have established a solid foundation for the 2024 campaign. Here are the key highlights:

Justin Steele, the standout pitcher, secured a substantial contract of $4 million for the 2024 season. Steele’s remarkable performance in 2023, boasting a 15-6 record and an impressive 3.06 ERA, has earned him the coveted position of the Cubs’ Opening-Day starter. His stellar achievements last year included an All-Star selection and a remarkable fifth-place finish in the Cy Young voting. Notably, Steele also set career highs in innings pitched (173.1) and strikeouts (176).

Adbert Alzolay, who emerged as a crucial asset for the Cubs, stepped into the role of the team’s closer with 22 saves out of 25 opportunities. His impressive statistics, including a 2-5 record and a notable 2.67 ERA, showcased his prowess on the mound, striking out 67 batters in just 64 innings.

Infielder Nick Madrigal will receive $1.81 million for the 2024 season. His 2023 performance featured a slash line of .263/.311/.352/.663, along with two home runs and 28 RBIs in 92 games.

Pitchers Mark Leiter Jr. and Julian Merryweather also reached agreements for the 2024 season, with contracts valued at $1.5 million and $1.175 million, respectively. Leiter achieved a 1-3 record with an impressive 3.50 ERA across 69 appearances, setting a career high for single-season appearances. Merryweather posted an impressive 5-1 record and a 3.38 ERA in 69 games, striking out 98 batters in 72 innings. He also contributed with two saves and 17 holds.

Mike Tauchman, a valuable outfielder, secured a contract worth $1.95 million. Tauchman joined the Cubs in 2023, making a significant impact with a slash line of .252/.363/.377/.740 across 108 games. His contribution included eight home runs and 48 RBIs, solidifying his place in the team.

As the offseason progresses, the Cubs’ proactive approach has further solidified their lineup. This successful resolution follows their earlier arbitration negotiation with Patrick Wisdom, securing his services with a one-year contract valued at $2.725 million in November. With these key moves, the Chicago Cubs are poised for a promising 2024 season.
